Teaching and Mentoring

I began teaching full time in 2004 and have completed over two decades of it. It has been a pleasure teaching an eclectic range of courses. I have taught undergraduates, postgraduates and doctoral research scholars. Each comes with its own challenges and with its own joys as well.

At Shiv Nadar University, in the current semester (Spring 2026), I am teaching a course titled ‘Cognition, Psychology, and Politics’. I will also be offering a shorter course in the second half of this semester titled ‘Evaluating Major Political Upheavals’. It was a pleasure to return to my teaching last semester (Monsoon 2025) after a year long sabbatical to teach a course on ‘International Law and World Politics’.

In the Monsoon Semester of 2023, I taught courses on ‘Global Political Thought’, ‘Cognition, Psychology, and Politics’ and a shorter course on ‘Graphic Novels and World Politics’ for undergraduates. Earlier in the Spring Semester of 2023, I had taught a course titled ´International Law and World Politics´ for undergraduate students. Prior to this, I have also taught a core course for doctoral research scholars on research methodology. I have taught core courses on ‘International Organizations and Global Governance’ and ‘International Security’ (the latter co-taught) as part of the B.A. Major (Research) in International Relations. I also offered a shorter course (as part of the core common curriculum – CCC) on ‘Climate Change and Conflict’ in the first half of the Spring Semester of 2020.

In the Monsoon Semester of 2019, I taught a core course on ‘Comparative Political Theory’ for doctoral research scholars and offered an elective for undergraduates titled ‘Bearing Witness: War Reportage and World Politics’. Prior to this I have also co-taught a core course on ‘Global History and International Relations’ for undergraduate students. Besides, I have also taught a shorter course (CCC) on ‘Graphic Novels and World Politics’ in the second half of the monsoon semester in 2018.

In March 2016, I taught a short module to graduate level students at Sciences Po, Paris on ‘Theorizing Security in Asia’. At South Asian University, I have taught core courses at both the Masters and M.Phil/PhD levels of study. These have included courses on Comparative Politics and Political Theory for Masters students in International Relations as well as core courses in Advanced International Relations Theory and Advanced Research Methods for M.Phil./PhD research scholars. In the winter semester of 2013, I also introduced an optional Masters course on ‘Cognition and World Politics’ apart from contributing a shorter module in a course on International Law dwelling on the on-going conversations between International Relations and International Law.

Prior to this, I had been teaching at Jawaharlal Nehru University from 2004 onwards till the Winter Semester of 2012. In 2005, I introduced a new course for M.Phil students at the Centre for International Politics, Organization & Disarmament (CIPOD) titled, ‘Culture, Norms and Identity in World Politics.’ I had also been teaching a course at CIPOD already on the books titled, ‘Globalization and the State.’ Besides these courses, I have taught a course on ‘Advanced International Relations Theory’ at the M.Phil level and have participated in contributing a ‘Philosophy of Science’ and ‘Case Study Research’ module in the jointly co-taught Research Methodology course at the Centre. At the Masters level, I have taught core courses on ‘Theories of International Relations’ and ‘Problems of International Relations’. I have also taught a full semester core course on ‘International Politics’ at the invitation of the Centre for Political Studies (CPS) at the School of Social Sciences (SSS), JNU in the Winter Semester of 2011.

MENTORING EXPERIENCE

At Shiv Nadar University (SNU), I am currently supervising one doctoral project. Prior to this two of my research mentees have submitted and defended their doctoral theses successfully. This takes my tally up to three at SNU and eleven completions in all currently. Prior to this, I have supervised nine doctoral and fifteen M.Phil. Research scholars dealing with an eclectic range of subjects at the CIPOD, SIS, JNU. All the doctoral scholars I have supervised at JNU have successfully defended their theses. At the South Asian University, I have supervised one M.Phil research scholar and a number of M.A. Dissertations as part of the Masters Programme in International Relations at the South Asian University. In my capacity as Chair of the Department of International Relations at the South Asian University, I was an integral part of the consultative process in conceptualising and operationalising a new doctoral programme at the Department.

At Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence (SNIOE), I have had the opportunity to lend stewardship both in terms of introducing a B.A. Major (Research) Program in International Relations and a new doctoral program offered by the Department of International Relations and Governance Studies at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.  In the past, I have co-supervised an undergraduate dissertation from the Economics Department and three undergraduate dissertations in International Relations during the academic year 2022-3 in my current home institution.
